If you already have a
barcode scanner you may not have to
purchase a scanner. FBI will update our Fixed Asset Tracking System (FATS) Software from an ASCII text file of barcode scans. Here's How FBI Works 1. Scan barcodes using your scanner. 2. Using your cable and your existing software, upload the scans from your barcode scanner and create an ASCII text file of barcodes. 3. Start FBI and pick the ASCII text file you created. 5. Enter the date the barcodes were scanned and click the Update Button. 6. FBI will read your ASCII barcode file and update FATS. 7. When it's done FBI will display "Complete". Requirements Your portable scanner must have the ability to scan barcodes and upload them to an ASCII text file. Your barcode scanner instruction manual or manufacturer should be able to help you with this. What is the "format" of the ASCII text file? If you were to open the ASCII text file with Windows "NotePad", the barcode scans MUST look like this: L0000002 In this file we see - (1) Asset barcodes that vary in length from 4 characters to 30 characters, (2) Location barcodes that begin with an L, (3) barcodes that consist of numbers and letters, (4) "blank" lines containing no barcodes, and (5) a few duplicate barcodes.
